Back when I worked in high tech, I had terrible insomnia for years. I was totally stressed out and I knew that thinking about work was keeping me up at night. However, I didn’t know how my job was affecting my organs and energy meridians from a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective.

If I did, I would have realized that taking valerian root or melatonin wasn’t going to fix the problem. I would have understood why magnesium supplements didn’t help me, and that they were actually making my insomnia worse.

I had all the classic signs of the TCM imbalances at the root of insomnia: stress, anger, worry, an extremely analytical job, red cheeks, tension in my neck and head, and others. But I didn’t understand the significance of these signs until I enrolled in acupuncture school and started learning about Chinese Medicine. The more I learned, the more I understood my body and what I needed to do to bring it back into balance to sleep better.
